When a visual
confirmation of genital warts is not enough, there are several methods
available to further confirm the diagnosis of genital warts.
Sometimes
lesions can only be made visible by an enhancing technique called
acetowhitening. Infected areas will turn white when a 5% acetic acid
solution is applied to the suspect area for about 10 minutes.
Using a
magnifying scope may be necessary to see the lesions. In females, a
colopscope can be used to look for genital warts in the vaginal canal
and on the cervix.
In order
to look for evidence of HPV infection and abnormal cells on the cervix,
a Pap smear should always be done.
If a
genital wart appears unusual or recurs after treatment to remove the
wart, a biopsy should be done to confirm evidence of HPV infection.
There are also other special laboratory tests that can be done to
confirm the presence of HPV infection.
